Get a glass of water and a pin. Hold the glass up to the wall and start to pin it up. And then drop the pin. You've got the glass in position just right, so you ask your victim real nice to get the pin for you. When they bend down to pick it up, dump the water on their head.
This works especially well when there's a crowd of people watching. It can also be very dangerous for the joker, so be careful if you try it.

Second April Fools Day Trick
The victim is on the pot in the dorm washroom. Everyone grabs a bucket (we used the waste baskets from our rooms) and fills the buckets with water. Take a paper bag and set it on fire, toss it under the door into the stall. Yell fire as everyone tosses the water into the stall. Needless to say the fire as well as the victim gets very wet.

First of all, belated Happy Halloween to all of you. So what trick did you play on your friends? Last year we had the experience of spookiest and scariest Halloween ever, thanks to one of friend who gave all of us the fright of our life. We all got our revenge on the April fool's day. Coincidentally, on 1st of April he had a flight to catch in the morning. We made a plan with his room-mate and made a every clock in his apartment two hours ahead. The plan went smoothly- he had to rush frantically to the airport and in the hurry he forgot his important files. It was after reaching the airport that he realized the prank we had played on him. But don't think that we put him in any big trouble. Hehe... after all,we are good people. We all met him in the airport where his roommate gave his important things and we all had a hearty meal.

Well, the day has finally come when all of your repertoires of tricks and treats are waiting to come out! Fools' Day is just a day away and I am sure that a lot of you people out there are waiting for the day to begin - I mean it's time to brush up on last minute pranks and gags, so here's a few that will surely make your day rockin'

Cereal Box Switch
Remove the plastic bags from cereal boxes and switch them around. Your victim will scratch his head wondering why Cheerios came out of a box of Lucky Charms.

Mail Box Prank
After the mail has already been delivered, fill the mail box with ping pong balls or packing nuts. Then ask someone else to go get the mail.

Push or Pull
Print out some signs that read, "Push" and "Pull" and tape them to doors at your local stores. Make sure to place them on the wrong side. Then sit back and watch as people push when they are instructed to pull and vise versa

Shoe Polish Phone Prank
Coat the receiver of someone's phone with shoe polish and then give them a call. Instant gratification. Make sure you match the colors of the polish and the phone. Small amounts of shaving cream work too.

Bar Of Soap Lather Prank
Take some nail polish and coat a bar of soap with it. Let it dry. Then put it in the bathroom shower. When your victim tries to use it, he or she will go nuts trying to get it to lather up.

April Fools' Day - Prank Ideas For Co-workers And Classmates

Here are few fun, yet harmless pranks that you can play on your co-workers or classmates and simply get away with it! Take a look -

1) This one is simple, but very effective -- even more so if the victim has been on vacation, and away from computers for a while. Simply switch the "M" and "N" keycaps on their keyboard. Most office workers these days only partially touch-type. It's a big bonus if their password contains an "M" or and "N." Their frustration at not being able to log in is hilarious.

2) Scotch tape their phone handset down. Believe it or not, a lot of people don't notice this. Or, if they have an older mouse, scotch tape the bottom of the mouse. They move their mouse back and forth, and nothing happens. Some of them even slam it around, trying to get it to work.

3) A quick and easy prank. Wait for someone to walk away from their PC. Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Mouse. Select the "Pointers" tab and change the first cursor (Normal Select) from an arrow to the same thing they use for the "Busy" cursor. See how long they will stare at their screen waiting for the computer to finish what it's doing.

4) Carefully cut a piece of black construction paper so that it exactly covers the glass on a computer monitor. Using double-sided tape, fasten the paper to the monitor. Chuckle as they turn on the computer, and see nothing but a black screen.

5) Go to the Windows Control Panel and double-click "Mouse." Switch the right mouse button so that it's activated by the left mouse button, and vice-versa. For even more fun, make the mouse go as slowly as you can, then laugh as it takes them forever to switch it back.

Ring your friend before he / she goes to work and say " I'm so sorry to hear you got fired ! " - Act surprised they didn't know yet.

Place Cling-film over the toilet seat - an old prank but a good one !

Ring your friend and pretend to be from the local GP's office. Tell them they might have Newcastles Disease ( a chicken disease - don't tell them that ).

Go around the office and tell random people that a particular person (e.g. your friend) wanted them to drop over at 11am - they will be surprised when 50 people drop around to their cubicle at once.

When you visit your friends house, put a squirt of washing up liquid in their dishwasher. Next time they run it suds will come oozing out the door.

Place a coin on the ground and wait for someone to bend down to pick it up. As they do, tear a piece of fabric and they'll think they just burst their pants.

Tie a thin, almost invisible piece of thread to a coin and place it on the ground. Wait for someone to bend down towards it and pull it away at the last second.

Wait 'till someone is drinking a can of fizzy soda and when their not looking drop in some sugar or a sugar sweet. The soda will fizz up and start pouring uncontrollably out of the can.

College life is certainly the golden period of our lives. Living in a college dormitory, playing pranks on roommates and making a mess of the dorm is just part of all the fun and make for some of the most cherished moments and happiest and even funniest memories of our lives. Even the mortified victims recall the times with a special smile. Here are some of the hit college prank ideas that you will love:

- Arm yourself with a camera with a flash and a cap gun. At 2 a.m., knock at the people's doors and as soon as they open the door, take a picture with one hand and shoot the cap gun pointing to them and run away. They will think for a moment that they have been shot at.

- Ask your victim to let you crack 3 eggs for their head for 100 dollars. If he/she says 'yes', crack two eggs rubbing all the yolk well on them and then walk off saying, you don't want to crack the third egg and thus, you don't own them the promised money.

- Empty your friend's shampoo bottle and put baby oil in it instead. Next time, they rush in the bath to shampoo their hair; they will come out with oily slick look.

- If there is only one toilet on your floor, lock it from inside using a rope trick after putting a pair of old boots in them as if someone is sitting on the seat. See how people will keep rattling about it all throughout the day.

- If your roommate is a deep sleeper, just carry him or her off with a few friends to the middle of the campus when he is sleeping. Imagine his surprise when he/she wakes up to see so many people gathered around his/her bed.

- Put superglue on someone's slippers and see them struggle to get it off from their feet!

- Set the 4:00 am wake up alarm in the victim's alarm clock and hide it in the corner of the closet and remember to sleep in your room.

- You may cause the panic in the middle of the night by putting a cigarette close to a smoke alarm.

- Take a bunch of grapes and put one grape on everything in the fridge, including bottle, cold meat packet, juice cans, beer cans, butter and everything else there in the night. Repeat it twice or thrice so see the real irritation on everyone else's face who is using the fridge.

- Take a long piece of chemistry tubing and tie a knot at one end. Fill it with water and carry it to the victim's room and insert the open end under the door and flood it.

- Take an extra large glass of water. Ask your friend to place hands on a table with their palm facing downwards. Put a glass on the top of one hand and ask them whether it hurts or not. If they say 'No', then ask them to put one hand on top of the other and put the glass on top of it. Then leave the room with a big smile on the face.

Ingredients:
* Lemon Jell-O

Method:

Ingredients:
* Cake cones wafer with flat bottoms
* Batter of any cake
* Ready-made vanilla or chocolate frosting
* Sprinkles
* Cake decorating bag with a star cake-decorating tip

Methods:

* Pour cake batter into the cones up to three-fourths of their capacity.
* Bake for about 15 minutes at 350°F temperature.
* Let it cool and set.
* Put frosting into decorating bag with star tip and swirl the frosting on the top like a soft-serve ice cream.
* Add sprinkles if desired.

Pizza Candy

Ingredients:
* 1 - Unbaked piecrust
* Green dots candies
* 1 - Red fruit roll
* 1/2 cup - Shredded coconut
* Yellow food coloring
* 1 - Small jar of red jelly

Method:
* Put piecrust on a round pizza pan, folded at the edges to resemble a pizza crust.
* Bake the crust as directed.
* Cut the dots into bell pepper like pieces using butter knife.
* Cut fruit rolls into pepperoni like circles using cleaned and washed scissors.
* Mix and shake coconut shreds and food coloring thoroughly.
* Spread the jelly on crust, sprinkle it with coconut and candy pieces and decorate with fruit roll circles.
* Serve the yummy pizza candy.

Have all the fun cooking and witnessing the shock on the faces of the people with these hilarious outstanding recipes, carved out only for April Fools' Day. On April Fools' Day, serve the dishes in the reverse order.

Thus, your guests are treated to the dessert first, then the main dish, then the salad and appetizer comes only at the last. It is a good idea to mix up the utensils and the containers so gravy goes into the sugar bowl, soup in casserole dish, salads in the glasses and appetizers in soup bowls.

The other ideas include missing and mixing up everything like serving jello in ice-cream cones, super sour candies, pizza with silly face toppings, pancakes for lunch, ice cream cake and eating everything with chopsticks. Food is essential for any occasion or any celebration! Anything that conveys fun and happiness should have a special corner dedicated to food! Hence, how can April Fools' Day be left far behind?

Faux French Fries
------------------

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

1 package of plain, prepared breadstick dough
Kitchen scissors
Sugar
White envelope
Seedless strawberry jam

1. Begin by unrolling the dough and separating the breadsticks. Use kitchen scissors to cut them into 1/4-inch-wide sticks.

2. Roll all the sticks in sugar, then bake them on a cookie sheet according to the package directions or until golden brown. Leave them on the tray until they're cool.

3. Make this mix-up even more fun by putting the fries in a fast-food fry sleeve (the cutoff end of a sealed envelope; ours was 2 1/2 inches deep) and serving them with a side of "ketchup" (jam whisked with a fork to a smooth consistency.

Chicken Not-Pie
--------------------

RECIPE INGREDIENTS:

l (4 1/2-inch) aluminum foil potpie tin
1 refrigerated piecrust (most 15-ounce packages contain 2 crusts)
Aluminum foil
1 egg
2 tablespoons water
1 (3.4-ounce) box instant vanilla or white-chocolate pudding
1 yellow and 2 orange Starburst candies
1 green Chewy Jolly Rancher candy or green Tootsie Roll candy
1 banana
1 to 2 dried apple rings or a bar of white chocolate

1. Bake the crust:
Heat the oven to 450°. Unroll or unfold a piecrust on your work surface. Using the upside-down potpie tin as a guide, cut a circle of dough about 1/2 inch larger than the tin. (If you're making more than one potpie, simply cut another circle from the dough. Reroll the scraps to cut out a third.) Crumple a piece of aluminum foil into a 1 1/2-inch ball and set it in the potpie tin. Cover it with a layer of foil to create a smooth mound, then lay the circle of dough on top.

2. Now press the tines of a fork around the edge of the dough to crimp it, then use the fork to gently poke a few holes in the crust.

3. Beat the egg with the water, then brush the mixture over the dough.

4. Set the pie tin on a baking sheet and bake the crust for about 10 minutes. Let it cool completely.

5. Make the filling:
Prepare the pudding according to the package directions and refrigerate until serving time.

6. Create the faux chicken and vegetables:
To make the Starburst or Tootsie Roll candies easier to work with, place them unwrapped on a paper plate and warm them in the microwave just until they're slightly softened, about 12 to 15 seconds. (The Jolly Rancher candies will soften from the warmth of your hands.) Once you've shaped them, lay the candies on waxed paper or a paper plate, set apart from each other so they won't stick together.

7. Corn kernels: Roll the yellow candy between your hands or on a clean work surface to create a 4-inch-long rope, then use kitchen shears or a sharp knife to cut the rope into 1/4-inch pieces. With your fingers, form each piece into a kernel by flattening one end and pinching the other.

8. Chicken: Use kitchen shears or a knife to cut the apple rings into 1/2-inch-wide pieces. If you're using white chocolate, chop or break it into roughly 1/2-inch-wide pieces.

9. Peas: Roll the green candy into a 5-inch-long rope. Cut the rope into 1/4-inch pieces, then roll each piece into a ball.

10. Potatoes: Peel the banana, slice off three 1/4-inch-thick pieces, then cut each piece into small cubes.

11. Cubed carrots: Cut each orange candy into 4 squares.

12. Assemble the pie:
Just before serving time, spoon about 2/3 cup of the pudding into the pie tin.

13. Add the candies and the fruit to the pudding, then set the piecrust on top.

Google has often adopted a light-hearted approach in a variety of circumstances. The most popular instances of Google Humor are the April Fool Jokes. Google has had a tradition of perpetrating April Fool's Day hoaxes.

2000: Google MentalPlex
Google announced a new "MentalPlex" search technology that supposedly read the user's mind to determine what the user wanted to search for, thus eliminating the step of actually typing in the search query.

2002: Pigeon Rank
Google reveals the technology behind its PageRank System — PigeonRank. Google touts the benefits of this cost-effective and efficient means of ranking pages, and reassures readers that there is no animal cruelty involved in the process. The article makes many humorous references and puns based on computer terminology and how Google PageRank really works.

2004: Google Lunar/Copernicus Center
Fictitious job opportunities for a research center on the moon. Luna/X (a pun to Linux as well as a reference to the Windows XP visual style and Mac OS X) is the name of a new operating system they claimed to have created for working there.

2005: Google Gulp
Google Gulp, a fictitious drink, was announced by Google in 2005. According to the company, this beverage would optimize one's use of the Google search engine by increasing the drinker's intelligence. It was claimed this boost was achieved through real-time analysis of the user's DNA and carefully tailored adjustments to neurotransmitters in the brain (a patented technology termed Auto-Drink). The drink was said to come in "4 great flavors": Glutamate Grape (glutamic acid), Sugar-Free Radical (free radicals), Beta Carroty (beta carotene), and Sero-Tonic Water (serotonin).
This hoax was likely intended as a parody of Google's invite-only email service called Gmail. Although ostensibly free, the company claimed the beverage could only be obtained by returning the cap of a Google Gulp bottle to a local grocery store: a catch-22. In the Google Gulp FAQ, Google replies to the observation "I mean, isn't this whole invite-only thing kind of bogus?" by saying "Dude, it's like you've never even heard of viral marketing."

2006: Google Romance
On April Fool's Day 2006, Google Romance was announced on the main Google search page with the introduction, "Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance." It pretends to offer a "Soulmate Search" to send users on a "Contextual Date". A parody of online dating, it amusingly had a link for "those who generally favor the 'throw enough stuff at the wall' approach to online dating" to Post multiple profiles with a bulk upload file, you sleaze in addition to Post your Google Romance profile. Clicking on either of these gave an error page, which explained that it was an April Fool's joke and included links to previous April Fool's Jokes for nostalgia.

The phobic name for the fear of April Fools' Day is Aphrilophobia.

There are various retorts used to pranksters when April fool jokes are attempted on the wrong day:

"April Fool's a-comin' and you're the biggest fool a-runnin'."
"April Fool's past, and you're the biggest fool at last."
"April Fool's has come and gone: who's the fool that carried it on?"
In the film The French Connection, the opening scenes take place on April 1 and show children in Marseille running around pinning poissons d'Avril (April fish) on each other.

Apple Computer was founded on April 1st 1976[7]

The April 1 tradition in France includes poisson d'avril (literally "April's fish"), attempting to attach a paper fish to the victim's back without being noticed. This is also widespread in other nations, such as Italy (where the term "April's fish" is also used to refer to any jokes done during the day).

In Spanish-speaking countries, similar pranks are practiced on December 28, the Day of the Holy Innocents. This custom also exists in certain areas of Belgium, including the province of Antwerp. The Flemish tradition is for children to lock out their parents or teachers, only letting them in if they promise to bring treats the same evening or the next day.

In Iran, people play jokes on each other on April 3, the 13th day of the Persian calendar new year (Norouz). This day is called "Sizdah bedar" (Outdoor thirteen). It is believed that people should go out on this date in order to escape the bad luck of number 13.

On 2-Ten FM in the United Kingdom, station claims that an elephant is causing traffic problems on the M4.

Defying gravity: In 1976, British astronomer Sir Patrick Moore told listeners of BBC Radio 2 that unique alignment of two planets would result in an upward gravitational pull making people lighter at precisely 9:47 a.m. that day. He invited his audience to jump in the air and experience "a strange floating sensation." Dozens of listeners phoned in to say the experiment had worked.

Change of drinking age: On the Gold Coast, Australia's biggest tourist destination (particularly amongst schoolies), radio station Sea FM announced the drinking age would be changed from 18 to 21. This left a huge number of under-21s angry and frustrated, and incited protests. It was later announced at the Sea FM dance party that it was a hoax.

Death of a mayor: In 1998, local WAAF shock jocks Opie and Anthony reported that Boston mayor Thomas Menino had been killed in a car accident. Menino happened to be on a flight at the time, lending truth to the prank as he could not be reached. The rumor spread quickly across the city, eventually causing news stations to issue alerts denying the hoax. The pair were fired shortly thereafter, after which they became famous when their show became syndicated.

Free concert: Radio station 98.1 KISS in Chattanooga, Tennessee falsely announced in 2003 that rapper Eminem would be doing a free show in a discount store parking lot. Several police were needed to deal with traffic gridlock and enraged listeners who threatened to harm the DJs responsible. Both DJs were later jailed for creating a public nuisance. Also, radio station WAAF 107.3 in Boston announced that Pearl Jam was having a free concert in a fictional city in New Hampshire. A gas station in New Hampshire reported that several streams of car drivers stopped in asking for directions to the fictional town.

Sydney Olympics (1): Australian radio station Triple J breakfast show co-host Adam Spencer announced in 1999 that he had a journalist on the line at the site of a secret IOC meeting and that Sydney had lost the 2000 Summer Olympics. New South Wales Premier Bob Carr was also in on the joke. Mainstream media (including Channel 9's Today Show) picked up the story.

Tsunami warning and intense storm: In 2005, Estonian Radio's station Vikerraadio broadcasted right after 9 o'clock news a hoax in their morning program Vikerhommik. Station said that Finland had been put under a tsunami warning and wave was expected to be more than 5 meters high. They also said that Estonia was expecting heavy storm and that hurricane force winds were possible in Finland. Hosts also said that they were looking at the satellite image and it really showed very intense cyclone in Northern Europe. It was immediately proven to be hoax after a quick look at the weather maps.

Free wine for all:The Norwegian newspaper "Bergens Tidende" announced in 1987 that the state's alcohol monopoly had 10,000 litres of illegally smuggled wine that had been confiscated. The inhabitants of Bergen were invited to the main store in town to receive their share of the goods, rather than to spill good wine down the drain. That morning staff were met by about 200 men & women with bottles, buckets, and other suitable vessels for carrying the prized goods. Legislation in Norway causes alcohol to be relatively expensive and have limited availability[citation needed].

Taco Liberty Bell: In 1996, Taco Bell took out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times announcing that they had purchased the Liberty Bell to "reduce the country's debt" and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell." When asked about the sale, White House press secretary Mike McCurry replied with tongue-in-cheek that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and would henceforth be known as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

In April 2006, the "Best Damn Sports Show Period" staged a fight between Tom Arnold and Michael Strahan. On Friday March 31st the show went off the air as Tom Arnold was wrestling NY Giant's defensive end Michael Strahan to the ground over comments Tom made in a tell-all book. Strahan pretended to be very hurt by screaming and clutching his shoulder as the cameras cut to black. It fooled cast members Rodney Peete and Rob Dibble enough to have them interject in the fight. Rodney Peete went so far as to give Tom rabbit punches while he broke up what he thought was a real fight. It also worked enough to fool the popular internet site "deadspin.com" into reporting it as a real event.

Maya Karin of Channel VI International announced during [V]-Rated Weekend that the channel had taken a change of direction; instead of music, there would be World News, followed by a round-table discussion on the Merits of Literary Fiction on Civic Consciousness, and then some classical music.

NBC ran some Public service announcements in the style of the "The More You Know" campaign, done by cast members of "The Office", while in character. An example by Dwight Schrute: "Black bears weigh between 2 and 500 pounds. Brown bears weigh between 300 and over a thousand pounds. Black bears run away from you. Brown bears run at you. When attacked by a bear, simply lie still on the ground and cover your face and head with your hands. When the bear's finished batting you around and mauling you, contact the U.S. Forest Service." On Newsround, a BBC news program for children, presenter Jake Humphrey announced that David Beckham will not be playing in the 2006 World Cup as his parents are Scottish.

One-Third of Workers Admit to Playing Jokes on Co-Workers on April Fools day

Time to dust off the whoopee cushions and hand buzzers. April Fool's Day is just around the corner and hijinks isin order at the office. Thirty-three percent of workers report they have played a practical joke on a co-worker and 17 percent say they are planningoffice tricks for this year's holiday. This is according to
CareerBuilder.com's annual survey, which was completed in March 2006 and
included more than 2,500 workers.
If you are looking to play a prank on a co-worker, consider the top ten
April Fool's Day pranks from this year's survey:

1. Changed the caller ID on a co-worker's phone to read Mr. Kitten every
time he called someone.
2. Placed random objects from people's desks in the vending machine.
3. Placed a live goldfish in an IV bag in a clinic.
4. Snuck onto someone else's computer and sent out an "I love you" email
to the entire office.
5. Wall-papered someone's entire cube with headshots of his co-workers.
6. Pulled the shelves out of the break room refrigerator, hid inside and
jumped out at co-workers as they opened the door.
7. Sat on the copier and placed the copies back in the paper bin.

Does your office have desks with drawers that can easily be removed? If so, try this; when there's no-one else in, swap a few drawers around. It doesn't matter who they belong to, although the effects are best if the victims don't know each other. Don't swap too many because the effect is best when most people are oblivious to the trick!

Hiding a sticker with 'April Fool!' on it at the bottom or the back of each drawer and keeping a poker face will also help to keep suspicion away from you. Especially, if you swap one of your own drawers!

The Office Romeo

Gentlemen, have you been playing the cad in the office? Beware, this particular Researcher's trick will shame you in front of your co-workers and is great payback for any erring Romeo.

Here's an old prank from the office where I used to work. Every Valentine's Day the reception area would be filled with flowers from ever-loving boyfriends to their girlfriends. We thought it would be hilarious to get one of the girls in our office to phone up one of the chaps and say, 'Hello this is reception, we have some flowers here for you'. On receiving the call, this chap then announced to the whole department that he'd got some flowers waiting for him and promptly wandered off to 'collect' them! Imagine his embarrassment when he got to reception and they had no clue who he was or why he might think there would be flowers there for him.
And they talk about the evil that men do...

Computers

One of the easiest (and arguably most effective) computer tricks to set up is this. It will only work if you are in an office where the computers are arranged so that one is opposite another on the same desk; ie if the computers weren't there, you'd be looking straight at the person opposite you.

All you do is swap either the keyboards or monitors between two computers that are back-to-back - but you don't unplug them. So if you swap keyboards, the keyboard you have is now plugged into the computer on the other side of the desk, and vice versa. When the person opposite you types something, nothing comes up. Until you start typing...

Changing the keyboard settings to use the 'Dvorak' layout is also a good prank. Most people don't know that the keyboard layouts can be switched at all, and the only keys that are common between the Dvorak and standard 'Qwerty' layout are 'a' and 'm', so people spend a lot of time typing gibberish and running virus-checks.

Mice

Basically, this is the same gag as above, but change the mice over instead of the keyboard/monitor.

You could also try the following: Windows has a setting to set the mouse up for left-handed users, swapping the buttons over. That's evil to do to someone who's right-handed.

Another one is that with some computers, the mouse options include a facility which allows you to designate the orientation of the mouse, so that if you are more comfortable holding the mouse at, say, 32°, you can. We don't need to describe what you can do with that.

Cars

Cars are an obvious target for any and every April Fool's Day prankster - especially if your victim is male. There's only one thing men cherish more than their motors... Here's a few suggestions:

Advertising

If you can get the keys to the car, park it by a busy road with a prominent 'For Sale' sign in the window (front and rear). Then put a really low price on it and the number of the victim. They will get calls all day.

The following is one Researcher's experience of just how effective this can really be:

... the conductor of my choir stopped dead in the middle of a rehearsal, looked us all in the eye' and said, 'If I ever find out who put my car in 'Loot' (a popular London daily small-ads paper), I will f*****g kill him!'. And then carried on with the rehearsal.

Tinkering

The old classic of gift wrapping a car is simply the best. Get lots of plastic foodwrap - industrial strength if possible - then just wrap it round the car, several times, making sure to cover all areas thoroughly. You might like to add a ribbon for that special, personal touch.

This researchers experience is definitely one for those in the know...

I have an associate's degree in automotive technology (I'm a well-educated grease monkey). While in school, an April Fool's Day came around. I walked into class after everybody else (the instructor had me doing other work in the shop) and found a small parts box sitting on my table - a common occurrence in an automotive class. Curious, I opened it up and found a condensor inside (a capacitor used in the ignition system - that should have been my first clue). I pulled it out and examined it while talking to a friend. I'm used to dealing with electrical pieces, and I have a habit of only touching insulation if possible. While talking, my attention slipped. I touched the body of the condensor and the end of the wire brushed against a finger. My arm straightened right out and my body jerked. '@#$%!' was my reply as the whole class burst into laughter. They had waited in anticipation for about five minutes while I jabbered, waiting for me to make the mistake.

First of April is a day full of fun, tricks and pranks for all kids as they go around making fool of everyone they can get their hands and fooling each other too. There are a number of few children's books about April Fool's Day that illustrate the spirit of the day very well and will certainly be loved by them. Here are the names of some that I found here -

- April Fool! - Published by Puffin Books, the rhyming text story is written by Harriet Ziefert and Chris Demarest has etched the beautiful and colorful sketches in watercolor and ink. It is a simple easy-to-read book about a boy named Willy who rides to his school on a skateboard on April Fool's Day and tells a tall tale to his friends on the way making a fool of them.

- April Foolishness - Published by Albert Whitman & Co., the rhyming text of the book has been penned by Teresa Bateman and the pictures and illustrations have been drawn by Nadine Bernard Westcott. This picture book will be loved by four-to-eight year olds as they listen while laughing and chuckling about a grandpa sitting calmly in the farmhouse despite all his grandchildren coming to warn him of some disaster or the other, thinking himself to be the wisest one and determined not to be fooled by the young ones on this April Fool's Day. However, as it turns out that it was the grandma who had the last laugh.

- Arthur's April Fool - Published by Little, Brown and Co., Marc Brown has penned this delightful story about a young boy named Arthur who turns the table against Binky Barnes, a big bully at school. Binky is a nasty boy who steals the favorite pen of Arthur's while he was rehearsing his magic act for the school April Fool's Day assembly and despite all the nightmares and Binky being made his assistant, Arthur manages to make Binky an April Fool and tackles the situation with flying colors.

- Look Out, It's April Fool's Day! - Published by William Morrow & Co., this is a good read-aloud book penned by Frank Modell. There is only one or two sentence per page with cartoon like pen and watercolor illustrations to attract children. The story is simple. It is about two boys, Marvin and Melvin. Marvin keeps trying to fool Milton while taking a walk on April Fool's Day but fails continuously until their mutual kidding leads to a funny situation where both the boys fool each other unconsciously.

April Fools' Day - Disney Hoaxes

When it comes to fun, merriment and making people laugh, Disney has indeed led the world with its creative ideas. The big brand name and the famous multi-millionaire empire of Disney world and its cartoon characters add official credibility to the hoaxes and spoofs related to Disney. People are so ready to believe that Disney is always ready to buy almost anything and everything famous to add to its classic fun collection of Euro Disney theme park that they readily believe almost every rumor of selling out the famed treasures to the company. Here are three incidents that we have fished out for the purpose:

- In 1986, French citizens residing in Paris were quite shocked by the agreement between the government and Disney that the famous Eiffel Tower would be dismantled and reconstructed in the new Euro Disney theme park that was to built in the east of Paris, so that the space that it occupies could be used to built a stadium for 1992 Olympic Games that could accommodate about 35,000 seats.

- In 1995, Russians kept their calm on the report of the Irish Times that the Disney Corporation was in negotiations with the Russian government to buy the embalmed body of the famous communist leader Vladimir Ilyich Lenin that was kept on display in Red Square and keep it in the new Euro Disney theme park to boost their profits. The body was to receive full Disney treatment including being displayed under stroboscopic lights to add pallor to the pallid face, playing of the excerpts from President Reagan's 'evil empire' speech and selling of Lenin t-shirts. The main controversy arose on the dismantling and moving of the mausoleum where the body was kept. While Liberal groups wanted to keep it as empty as it would be as a symbol of the 'emptiness of the Communist system,' Russian nationalists wanted to make it a memorial dedicated to Tsar Nicholas II.

- On 1st of April, 1998, some of the students of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology hacked its homepage and placed an announcement on it that the prestigious university was being sold to Walt Disney Co. for $6.9 billion. The University would be dismantled and reconstructed in Orlando with an addition of special Disney schools in the campus such as the School of Imagineering, the Scrooge McDuck School of Management, and the Donald Duck Department of Linguistics. There was a photograph too in which the university's famous dome had been fitted with a pair of mouse ears.

* The boy asked the girl out on their first dinner together and just after ordering food, he shrugged his shoulders and said – “It’s not a place I like but I had to use this 2-for-1 coupon before it expired.”

* Just think how you will feel after meeting your beau for the first time outside the office and hearing him say, “I've grown so much in the past few years. There was a time when I wouldn't have given someone like you a second look.” Or “I have finally learned to accept that my date cannot be as smart as I am.”

* Many girls have been disappointed to find that their dates just can’t stop thinking, talking and comparing them to their ex-es.

* Men who cannot just stop talking about how adorable, cute or naughty their nieces or nephews or pets are should stay at home and play with them.

* Men who take liberty to start calling their dates by pet names, the moment they meet them, may seem just too fast and scare away all the ‘good marriageable girls’. Talking about sex and sexual preferences is a double whammy too.

April Fools' Day - Worst Hoaxes!

There have been April Fool pranks and hoaxes that have gone wrong. It is the magnitude and sensitivity scale of the hoax that makes it pleasant or unpleasant. Pranks should be able to make others laugh including the victim/s. Any statement or thoughtless action that hurts somebody, plays with their feelings and emotions or is mirthless are detestable on any first of April or April Fool's Day.

- A year after Ochoco creek was flooded and hundreds of houses were damaged in 1998, DJs at Oregon radio station KSJJ announced that the Ochoco dam had burst and there were strong chances of all the nearby areas being flooded. There was widespread panic and as people prepared to flee, DJs admitted it to be just a joke. Well, no one was amused by their prank.

- After his divorce, Randy Wood was still bitter with his ex-wife and decided to pull a prank on her and really managed to frighten her in the process. He called her up and asked her to come over, as he wanted to show her something. When she arrived there, she was terrified to see him hanging by a noose from a tree in his front yard. She immediately dialed 911 only to found out later that this fake hanging using a lineman's harness was only staged to scare her. Randy was fined with $1,000 and a year in jail for his prank.

- Glenn Howlett working in the London City Hall rushed back from his vacation when he received the memo from his office that the deadline of the big report he was working on, was pre-poned and was going to be due early in just two weeks. Though, the memo was dated 1st of April, he could not guess that it was just a prank of his colleagues. He worked himself into such a frenzy and panic that he became susceptible to heart palpitations, collapsed from the stress and had to take leave from work. Too much of work and risk to his health made him file for an early retirement, only to realize later that the memo was just a joke. He later sued everyone for damagers forcing City Hall to ban his employees from pulling any more pranks.

- Saddam Hussein and his son Uday have been alleged to fool Iraqi citizens on 1st of April for four consecutive years from 1998 to 2001. Uday owns a newspaper known as 'Babil', which announced to its readers in 1998 that President Clinton had decided to lift sanctions against Iraq. Later, admitting this to be a joke was not a good enough consolation to those whose hopes had been built up high on the news. In 1999, the readers had to swallow the joke that the monthly food rations would be supplemented to include bananas, Pepsi, and chocolate. These 'jokes' were repeated in 2000 and 2001 respectively, which was enough to break the spirit of anybody living in desolate conditions and readily lapped up any dose of hope that they were offered.

- The Opinia newspaper was heartless enough to try to fool families waiting to be reunited with their loved ones that had been imprisoned in Baia Mare Prison in Romania for several years by announcing in April 2000 that the prisoners are finally going to be released. About sixty people traveled long distance to the prison to greet their near and dear ones only to be told that it was just an April Fool prank! Later, the 'Opinia' published an apology for not thinking of the consequences well enough.

April Fools' Day - Clowning Trivia!

Joseph Grimalidi is supposed to be one of the earliest circus clowns in true sense. He made his first appearance in 1805 in England and his clown was known as Joey. He performed classic physical tricks such as tumbling, pratfalls and slapstick beatings. About fifty years later, Auguste clowns made their appearance with a big nose, clothes that were too loose, large shoes and untidy manners.

These clowns used to entertain the people and make them laugh by spoiling the tricks of the 'white face' clown by messing things up at the last moment. Adrien Wettach was a famous whiteface pantomimist, who introduced a clown named Grock. This melancholic clown induced laughter in the audiences because of the way he always had bad luck with inanimate objects such as chairs that collapse when he tried to sit on them and the piano that he shoved into the stool accidentally.

Grock resembled the American vagabond clown known as Emmett Kelly. Auguste clown has its origin in Germany in 1869. An American acrobat named Tom Belling was performing there with his circus group and was confined to his dressing room as a punishment for not being discipline and missing his tricks. To pass time, he put on clothes that were too big for him in front of his friends and started imitating the show manager, who just happened to step into the room at the time. Thus, Belling started running and ended up in the circus arena where he stumbled and fell over the ring curb. This made audience laugh hard and yell 'Auguste!' (German for 'fool').

From then on, Belling was ordered by the manager to continue his performances as the Auguste' clown. Though, the story of the name may not be true (as it is believed that the word 'Auguste' made its entry in the German language only after the character), the character certainly became a favorite of the circus audience and kids.

Another story related to the origin of Auguste clown and Belling states that the character was copied from the Rizhii or Red Haired clowns that Belling saw while touring Russia. In their early stages, these clowns had a naturalistic appearance but later Albert Fratellini of the Fratellini Brothers introduced this exaggerated make up for them that have become a part of the tradition now.

Charlie Chaplin made yet another tramp-type fool or clown so popular that even today, kids love to watch his movies and performances. This tram associated with the auguste clown today was introduced by. Actually, it was James McIntyre and Tom Heath who introduced this tramp character in 1874 to portray the conditions of homeless African Americans who suffered during the Civil War. They had found blackface minstrel clowns as the source of inspiration for their character. This is why, even today the tramp clowns have white mouth.

April Fool's Day is the perhaps the best time to trick your friends or loved ones and even strangers and play practical jokes on them. Here are some out of the world ideas for you, that I found here.

1. Rearrange somebody's drawers or file cabinets in a different order and see them baffled.

2. Hard boil an egg and place it in the regular egg carton the night before. In the morning, ask someone to help you make breakfast and beat the egg to make omelets. Hand them the hard-boiled egg and watch them trying to crack it!

3. On the other hand, you may just glue the eggs to the carton and ask someone to hand them to you in the morning. As the victims struggle to take the eggs out of the carton, they break.

There are lots of fantastic tricks for heavy sleepers. Some of the popular ones are:

- Draw funny eyebrows and moustache on their faces while they are asleep.
- Place some whipped cream in their hands and tickle their nose with a feather.

Labeling people stuck to old traditions and customs as 'fools', sending them on 'fool errands' and hooking a paper fish on their backs as a joke to depict them as 'April Fish' that represented young and naïve fishes that are easily caught on the first day of April were a common practice in Britain, France and Scotland in the 18th century and were later introduced to the American colonies. With its spread and reach all over the world, it has now acquired an international flavor. Scottish people often refer to April Fool's Day as Taily Day, the day on which especially the spoofs involving the buttocks are put into action.

The victims of these jokes are known as 'April Gowk'. Gawk is another name for cuckoo bird. One can trace the continuance of these tricks in the popular 'Kick Me' signs that are placed on the victim's butts unknowingly to make people laugh. Mexican people celebrate a similar festival on December 28, which used to be a sad remembrance of the slaughter of the innocent children by the cruel King Herod. Later it evolved into lighter commemoration of children's pranks and trickery. English people call the fooled victims as 'noodle', 'gobs' or 'gobby'. They play pranks only in the morning and it is considered bad luck to play pranks and practical jokes after noon.

Romans celebrate a similar festival by the name of 'Hilaria', when their God Attis was believed to have resurrected. This festival is also known as 'Roman Laughing Day' and will be celebrated on 25th March this year. Portuguese celebrate a similar festival as April Fool's Day on the Sunday and Monday before Lent season, where people throw flour at their friends. India's festival 'Holi' that will be celebrated on 31st March 2005 is a Spring festival, where people play jokes on one another and smear each other's faces with colors and flower extracts.

Here, I have stated some agreements and announcements that sent a wave of uproarious protests and anger through the people and intellectuals only to know that they were actually caught by the infamous April Fools' Day spoofs.

- Many readers could not benefit from the sudden price change of the Boston Morning Globe in 1915 to half its cost on April Fool's Day. The management was as much surprised as the readers to note the price printed on the front page as 'one cent' instead of 'two cents per copy'. Well, 60,000 copies had already been sold at the regular price by then. Later, it was found to be the mischief of a production worker who had lowered the cost at the last minute.

- In 1992, the London Times reported that Belgium is going to be dissolved. Its Dutch-speaking north would join the Netherlands and the French-speaking south would join France. The article created such an uproar that the British foreign office minister Tristan Garel-Jones almost went on a TV interview to discuss it and the Belgian embassy received numerous calls from journalists and expatriate Belgians making enquiries about the news. Later, a rival paper later criticized Times for the prank and said that it had hurt the feelings of Belgians.

- In 1996, citizens of Philadelphia were outraged at the announcement made by the Taco Bell Corporation that it had bought the Liberty Bell from the government and renaming as Taco Liberty Bell. The mass hysterics could only be controlled a few hours later when it was revealed to be a practical joke. However, the witty White House press secretary Mike McCurry only answered to the question about the sale that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and was being renamed as the Ford Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

- Guinness played a similar trick in 1998 by issuing a press release that it had made an agreement with the Old Royal Observatory in Greenwich, England to be the official beer sponsor of the Observatory's millennium celebration. In exchange, the Greenwich Mean Time would be renamed as Guinness Mean Time until the end of 1999. The Financial Times also fell in for the joke and criticized the move.

- In 1999, a Canadian radio station cashed the idea of the Y2K threat by announcing that CD players would not be able to read the old music discs in 2000 and hence, people would have to buy hologram stickers worth $2 apiece that would enable them to read the old-format discs. The technology has been recently discovered. Warner Music and Universal Music Group were in on the joke. However, listeners were furious at the stated costs for something as cheap as stickers and demanded that the stickers should be given away for free. The outrage did not subsided easily, even after the radio station revealed that it was just a joke.

* You may also play treasure hunt with a slight variation, where you have to hunt a 'gawk' or a stuffed cuckoo bird, picture of 'April Fish' or a joker and other such related symbols. The winning team can then dare the other team or ask them to do something funny.

* Fill the rooms with the balloons and split the people in two teams and ask them to stomp on the balloons. The team getting the maximum number of balloons under their shoes and sandals wins.

Just imagine the kind of tricks that you can play on your unsuspecting guests! So, if you are game for lots of tomfoolery, then check out these party invitations that I found on the net.

- Write the invitation with white crayon on white paper making it illegible. Put in a colored crayon and tell the invitees to rub it on the paper to make the message appear.

- Post the 'Not invited' invitations. The message can go on as such - 'You are cordially not invited to the party, I am not having on 1st of April, so please do not be welcomed to the party snacks and drinks that will not be there at 7 o'clock in the evening.'

- Post the Thank you notes for the party before you arrange it. It can read - 'Thank you for coming to my April Fools' Day party and I bet you were the most foolish person there in the most stupid dress ever conceived.'

- Invitations printed backwards, upside down, in a spiral form, as an outline of a joker's photograph or the mirror image characters look funny too.

- Weird dress themes can be mentioned in the party invitations such wearing clothes backwards or inside out or any out of fashion clothes or clothes that are too large for the size of the person, dress in sacks or if the invitees are bold enough, even in diapers. They may be asked to enter the party wearing a bib or with a nipple in their mouths. After all, it's April Fools' Party!

- Cut the invitations in puzzles.

John Kallam's Qualifications -

Colonel John Kallam served for 20 years in the US Army from late 1930s to late 1950s. Having done BA in criminology, he had an illustrious profile as an investigator during the Nuremberg trials of Nazi war criminals, organizing civilian police forces in Germany in the post-war era for several years and writing a number of books on criminal justice. After retiring from military service, he joined as a lecturer in the Fresno State College of California that later came to be known as the California State University, Fresno. He naturally taught criminology and his experience made him an able teacher and earned him respect that he deserved. Yet, after ten years of service, the president of the college asked him to update his qualifications with a postgraduate degree, as a bachelor's degree was not enough anymore to teach in a prestigious college with changing times.

He even rubbed off that it was only due to his 20 years of experience and distinguished record that he was allowed a concession to continue only with a 'master's' degree rather than the doctorate degree, which was necessary for other faculty members. John Kallam was not too pleased of course. Yet, he got enrolled in a summer program at an out of state college that required three months of intensive seminars and then nine months of home study to earn him the degree of MA. Yet the biggest irony happened on the very first day of his class as a student in this summer program. When the instructor was taking roll, the instructor paused at his name and asked him that was he related somehow to John Kallam, the author of the textbook they were about to use. Just imagine his surprise on receiving the dry response that John Kallam, the author of the textbook he was about to use, was sitting in his class, to be taught from the very same book to earn a 'degree' deemed necessary to prove his qualifications!

John Partridge's Demise -

Jonathan Swift, the famous satirist, played an elaborate joke on the famous astrologer known as John Partridge. In February 1708, he assumed a pseudonym Isaac Bickerstaff, a rival astrologer of Partridge, who suddenly made an appearance in London by publishing an almanac in which Partridge's death was predicted on 29th March of that year and the fever was to be the cause of his demise. Partridge was outraged and persistently denied any substance in the prediction but the pamphlet published on 30th March by Bickerstaff confirmed that his prediction had indeed turned out to be true.

By 1st of April, everyone had heard of the event and a sexton arrived at Partridge's home to enquire of any orders for his funeral sermon. The effect was so complete that people get almost shocked when they saw him in flesh and many took him to be a walking ghost. Some people even approached him to tell him that he looked exactly like someone they knew but was now dead. John Partridge could never shake off the reputation of being a dead man for the rest of his life. Finally, Partridge had to stop publishing his almanacs because he couldn't convince people that the prediction about him was just an April Fool spoof!

Explosion In Wisconsin State Capitol Building -

The Madison Capital Times thought of a really witty satire on the constant debates that go on in the Senate and Assembly in 1933. On 1st of April, it announced that there had been explosions in the Wisconsin state capitol building that had turned it to ruins. Along with the article, a phony picture was also published that depicted that the Capitol Building was collapsing. Though, modern people can easily figure out that the photo had been tampered with, people of that times were really fooled by it. The explosions were said to be mysterious.

The funniest part was the reason that had been given for the explosions - it was said that explosions occurred due to the gas that had been generated in large quantities because of the 'verbose debate in the Senate and Assembly chambers' for past many weeks. The reason itself was so foolish that it could have been a dead giveaway, if the people had not been so ready to believe everything that was published. However, the readers were later outraged on this piece of misinformation and considered the April Fool hoax as 'tactless and tactless, void of humor and a hideous jest.'

Gangsters' Delight -

There are two April Fool stories that are sure to be gangsters' delight. Both stories belong to late 1990s. In 1996, Russian gangsters were increasingly becoming more and more active and ruthless. So, Itar-Tass thought that perhaps these heartless mercenaries would like to 'kill in style' with the help of diamond encrusted grenades that were being manufactured by a military factory for the first time in history, especially for Russian gangsters. The target customers of the grenades were certainly those fashion-conscious Russian gangsters, who would like to impress others with the stylish murders that they perform, which leave the dead bodies of their rivals, not in blood but covered with sparkling gems.

The Phoenix New Times in 1999 announce the formation of a new charity organization for the homeless people named as 'Arm The Homeless Coalition'. The story received 60-minute coverage on numerous local radio stations and the Associated Press and stunned many of the readers and the audiences with its unique way to help these poor people. Unlike other organizations that would normally provide these people with food and shelter or even try to educate them, provide vocational training to them and try to rehabilitate them in general, this organization had vowed to provide them with guns and ammunition so that they won't have any dearth of any kind in life. It was only after much had been said and debated about such an organization, it was revealed to actually be an April Fool hoax.

April Fools' Day - Real Life Hoaxes

Here are some weird and illogical rules and regulations and decisions imposed on the people in various regions. Thankfully, they were just April Fool hoaxes or they would have had drastic effects and might have resulted in rebellions, revolutions and mass movements to dethrone such stupid and eccentric authority.

In 1959, the Kokomo Tribune of Indiana announced that to cut the costs, the city police would close each night from 6 pm to 6 am and one can leave their messages on an answering machine, which will be screened by an officer in the morning. It will also lessen the pressure of work as many of the calls would be old by that time and there would be no need to answer them. A spokesman for the police commented that in the case there is an emergency call in the night, they can go check the hospitals and the coroner in the morning and know if anything has happened or not!

In 1987, a Los Angeles disc jockey that Los Angeles Highway System would be closed for an entire month for repairs from April 8. The citizens were highly alarmed by the startling news for they could not avoid the use of the highway to navigate through the city and immediately the radio station and the California Highway Patrol were flooded with thousands of frantic calls. The intense public response stunned even the station, not to mention that the California Department of Transportation didn't find it 'very funny.'

In 1991, the London Times announced the cabinet's approval of the plan of Department of Transport to alleviate overcrowding on the M25, the circular highway surrounding London by making the traffic on both carriageways travel in the same direction. Thus, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays the traffic would travel clockwise while on Tuesdays and Thursdays it would travel anti-clockwise. On weekends, traffic can go on as usual. Many people voiced their protest. A spokesman for Labor Transport warned that many people have 'trouble telling their left from their right.' A resident of Swanley, Kent said that the scheme was impractical because the villagers using the motorway to go for shopping to Orpington, would have to drive just for two miles on some days and 117 miles on others. Well, it was just a joke.

In 1993, the China Youth Daily, the official state newspaper of China had a government's decision as its first lead on the front page, where Ph.D. holders were exempted from the one child limit imposed by state to control population explosion. The story had a disclaimer in the end identifying it as a joke. Yet, Hong Kong's New Evening News and Agence France-Presse (an international news agency) were taken in and reported it as a fact.Intellectuals of the country thought the idea to be prompted by the Singaporeans who encouraged their intellectuals to marry and have children to ensure better crop of citizens for the next generation. The Chinese government declared such hoaxes and April Fool's Day as a hazardous tradition of the West while the Guangming Daily, Beijing's main newspaper read mostly by the intellectuals, published an editorial stating April Fool's Day to be a Liar's Day and having bad influence.

In the same year, Westdeutsche Rundfunk, a German radio station, made an official announcement about a new city regulation for the citizens of Cologne where the joggers going through the park could not go faster than six mph to avoid disturbing the squirrels in the middle of their mating season.

The physicist Mark Boslough's article published in April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter state that the Alabama state legislature had passed a bill and voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi. It was to be put to the Biblical value of '3.0' instead of the actual value '3.14159'. The article reached the world over through the Internet and soon the Alabama legislature was stormed with calls protesting such an illogical move. The original article was actually a parody on the legislative attempts to confine the teaching of evolution.

In 1999, the Savings Bank of Rockville placed an ad in the Connecticut Journal-Inquirer on 31st March to announce that they would charge their customers $5 fee for the help of a live teller to ensure enhanced 'professional, caring and superior customer service.' Though, it was a joke, customers were highly agitated by it and it was reported that one woman even closed her account with the bank because of it. The bank ran a second ad revealing the first one to be just a joke with the comment of bank manager that it had actually committed the bank 'to not charging such fees.'

New age philosophers aren't the only ones using these techniques. I work mostly in information technology. Big consultancies make lots of money in that field advising businesses on how they should approach technology.

I've been to quite a few consultancy presentations where all kinds of jargon and graphs are flashed up on the screen. The consultants will drop terms like "inverted blade-center uptime matrix" into the presentation while showing some baffling data on the screen. If I look around the room while this is going on, everyone will be nodding and wide-eyed. The audience is baffled by the cool-sounding words and the clever-looking graphs.

If, at this time, you ask the consultant what exactly an "inverted blade-center uptime matrix" is, they'll often try to fob-you off with even more meaningless jargon. If you persist in trying to pin them down, they'll start acting like you must be some kind of incompetent idiot for not understanding this stuff. And the audience will probably be on the consultant's side - they don't want to be seen as incompetent idiots. Consultants behave this way because they know that's how to get a sale. Bombard people with clever-sounding stuff they don't really understand, and they'll assume that you're some kind of genius. It's a great way of making money.

Stock analysts, economic forecasters, management consultants, futurologists, investment advisors and so on use this tactic all the time. It's their chief marketing strategy for the simple reason that it works.Just make a far-fetched claim - like you know where the stock-market will be this time next year - and dress it up in some fancy language, graphs, and figures. All sorts of otherwise intelligent people will virtually beg you to take their money.

Enron built an entire global company using this scheme. Often, during the late-90s press coverage about how wonderful Enron was, the writer would admit no-one knew quite how the company was making its money. They were quick to assure their readers that this was nothing to be alarmed about, however. This was the most admired company in the world, after all. Just listen to all that fancy energy-market jargon that the managers spout.It sounded clever, so it must be true.Only it wasn't.

Once you become aware of this scam, you start to see how it's used all over the place. Newspapers and magazines are full of articles about important organizations predicting this or that based on intelligent-sounding stuff. Big business and new-age gurus use it to cover up their dubious statements. Our society is awash with things that are tailored to sound more clever than they actually are.That's not to say that some concepts aren't genuinely difficult to understand and require technical terms, lots of data and graphs. However, those that honestly try to communicate these concepts do so by reducing the complexity as much as they can. They want you to understand, so they avoid dressing it up in more technical wizardry than is necessary.

It's when someone tries to sell you a concept that they've obviously taken steps to make appear more intelligent than it is that you should be suspicious. If they start raving on about things that are clearly unconnected to their idea – this was the technique used by Shakespeare, quantum physics shows this is true, it's a reverse matrix etc – alarm bells should be going off in your head. If their idea is so credible and smart, they shouldn't need to decorate it with these kinds of trinkets in order to impress you. Remember this, and you'll avoid being fooled by this popular and effective ruse.

There's a saying among con-men that smart people are easier targets, because they don't think they can be conned. I'm not sure if that's true, but there's one scam that's almost guaranteed to make smart people switch off their brains and reach for their wallets. It's a trick that's used so pervasively in our culture, that once you become aware of it, you start to see it everywhere.

Maybe you're already ahead of the game on this, but if not I'm going to spell it out for you. This isn't because I want you to take advantage of people - instead I want you to avoid being taken advantage of. Once you're aware of this ploy, you'll be much less susceptible to it. Most smart people have a hidden weakness and it's this – they're absolute suckers for anything that sounds clever.

As soon as you start hitting people with technical terms, fancy graphs, famous names and the like, you'll immediately increase your credibility. If they're smart, they're even more likely to find themselves nodding in agreement. Many intelligent people would rather cut off a finger than admit they don't know what you're talking about.

Let me give you a few examples...

Recently, I've watch a few new-age documentaries that employ this tactic. These films push a particular philosophy that sounds unbelievable such as "you can manufacture reality with your thoughts". In order to lend some credibility to their ideas, the have "experts" talk about how quantum physics scientifically proves this philosophy.

Quantum physics - now there's a heavy-sounding term. As 98% of the population knows absolutely nothing about quantum physics, who's going to argue with these people? They can say pretty much anything they want about that subject and most people will simply assume it's true.

Even better, they can pretend to be teaching their audience something important. A person who was previously completely ignorant about quantum physics now feels as if they understand something about it - even if that something is absolute baloney. The audience have been fed ideas they'll now defend even against someone who's a real expert in that subject. Nobody likes to be told that something they've been led to believe is wrong.

April Fools' Day - Tips for successful pranks, Part II

The right prank for the right person is the trick of the trade. A fake car scratch or broken glass tattoo is good for people who love their cars. Place a transparent plastic sheet on one's favorite carpet or book and drop gravy or ink on it. Foods that look delicious and taste funny are meant for those who can't themselves from tasting just a bit of everything that looks good and edible.

No one can become a master without a real interest at perfection. So, if you really want to become a master prankster, leave no way of escape for your victim. You may even want to watch Home Alone Part 1 for the idea of what I am talking about. Place a number of pranks at a number of places for the victim, so that once targeted by you, they cannot escape. Placing the tube of shaving cream with the toothbrush of the sleepy friend can be put in combo with a face soap that makes you dirty in the soap box the towel that is clean outside but has powdered color inside.

Good planning and careful study of the victim's schedule and mode of behavior always help in deploying successful pranks. You may need to lay a trap for the victim days in advance so that he/she won't suspect a thing on the intended day. One good prank is to carefully note the time when the victim normally uses his bathroom first time in the morning. Then place a transparent plastic sheet over his/her toilet tile a little before that or after the victim finally falls asleep in the night. Let down the toilet seat. Don't forget to capture a photograph of their expression when they come out.

Learn to control the excitement to get a hand at your victim to avoid blowing the cover of your state-of-the-art prank that you have placed for them. Try not to rush them or force them to do a thing or try something just because you are eager to see the result for if they smell the rat, all your efforts will get wasted.

Two or more jokes combined together heighten the effect. Much-awaited letter delivered to the victim's home early in the morning by their beloved fetching an appointment, fake snakes and plastic spiders in their cereal box and wallet/purse, credit and debit cards replaced by thick plastic sheet board of the same size, keys replaced with another set that looks same but cannot open the locks, onion juice in the perfume bottle and soap water in the milk bottle early in the morning are just the perfect ways to start pranking on the April Fool's Day.

It takes wit, humor, skills, understanding of human reactions and practice to be a master prankster and a practical joker. Here are some tips that will help you to fool and hoax people successfully on April Fool's Day and see their flushed faces as their reactions change from being shocked or stunned to being embarrassed and then to a roaring laughter or a funny smile.

Improvisations help enhance a prank by various degrees. Using ketchup or tomato sauce as blood can even be enhanced a little more if you use thick tomato gravy to make blood clots at a place or two! Give life to a plastic lizard by tying it with an invisible string and make it jump on the victim suddenly! You can also place a plastic bug inside some dish and if the restaurant manager is the victim, you can brawl and complain as much as you like! Improvise on the gluing the penny to the floor by cutting the penny in half using cutco scissors and keep the other half. Just see how many people try to pick even this half penny up!

Distractions of the victim help a lot while you are working on your pranks. While the person is busy with something, make someone who is masked ring the bell and attack the victim with the artificial knife whose blade pushes inside as soon as it touches something. Don't try this on a person with a weak heart. Ask a friend to give a ring to the victim's telephone and engage him an exciting and interesting conversation. Arrange a plastic skeleton at his side facing him and watch him being shocked from the sudden appearance of the ghost!

April Fools' Day - Historical Facts!

The most convincing historical evidence suggests that April Fool's Day originated in France in 1582, under King Charles IX. With the reform of the old Julian calendar by Pope Gregory XIII, the King ordered that the new year festivities associated with the vernal equinox be moved to January first according to the new Gregorian calendar. The vernal equinox celebrations started 25 March and lasted for a week, culminating in great dinners, parties and gift giving on 1 April. Many French men resisted the change and continued their annual 'Pagan' revelry on 1 April. They were mocked and ridiculed for persisting in their old ways, receiving fictitious invitations to non-existing parties.

The victim of such a prank was known as "Poisson d'Avril" or April fish, this being the time the Sun was leaving the zodiacal sign of Pisces … or fish. As a rule all functions occurring during this period came under that rubric. Even Napoleon I Emperor of France was nicknamed "Poisson d'Avril" when he married Marie Louise of Austria 1 April, 1810. French men continued to associate the date with whimsical April fooling, making it a uniquely French tradition. It was not until 1782, two centuries later that the practice crossed the channel and was adopted by the English, and from there it sailed to the New World with the pilgrims.

In Mexico, Peru and other Latin American countries the same tradition is celebrated on 28 December, known as "Dia de Los Innocentes". The day was once dedicated to mourning the innocent children slaughtered by King Herod during the early days of Christianity. It has evolved through the centuries and has acquired a lighter tone, full of sporting silliness, evoking joy and laughter.

Another intriguing symbol which has retained strong significance throughout history is the fish. It was worshipped as a deity by various peoples in Europe, Asia and the Mediterranean area. The fish was one of the astral signs of the Chaldean sun zodiac devoted to Sun worship. It was also worshipped by Syrians, Babylonians, Phillistines, Romans, Scandinavians and Greeks. The Egyptians still eat a pickled fish on their annual Spring day "Sham Al-Nessim", (Whiff of the breeze) and the ancients called their goddess Isis "Fish of the Abyss". In China, the great Mother Kwan Yi was often portrayed as a fish, and in India the goddess Kali was known as the "fish-eyed one".

The Church often Christianised pagan practices, emblems and even deities. Early Christians used the Greek word "ichthus" — fish — as an acrostic for Jesus based on the initial letters of the word (Iota Chi Theta Upselon Sigma) signifying Jesus Christ the son of God, the saviour, as explained by Saint Augustine.

The eating of fish on Friday is an old Swedish tradition honouring their Godess Friga… Romans also used Friday to worship Venus, calling it "dies viernes" day of Venus…

Ohio Barracuda Sighting-

ST. MARYS -- A local fisherman spotted an unusual inhabitant during a recent fishing trip to Grand Lake St. Marys. Upon further inspection, the inhabitant turned out to be a fish not common to the area.

Fisherman and outdoor enthusiast Max Power spotted a four-foot barracuda in the lake Tuesday afternoon. According to Power, the discovery came as a bit of a surprise since barracudas are not native to Ohio waterways.

"I was reaching down into the water and saw a rather large shadow approaching the boat," Power said. "At first I did not recognize it, but as it drew closer I noticed it was a barracuda."
Power acted fast and snatched his fishing net from the boat and put it in the water. After a few minutes of waiting, the fish swam into the net and Power pulled it into the boat.

"I couldn't believe how big it was," he said of the barracuda. "Luckily, I had my camera with me, so I quickly snapped a shot and released it back into the water -- those things got some teeth on them."

Barracudas are usually found along the sandy coasts of warmer waters, like Florida and the Caribbean. Spotting one in St. Marys, while rare, is not totally out of the picture according to a wild life official. "With the number of people buying exotic pets increasing, it is not unfeasible for this to happen," Director of the Federal Organization on Observing Lakes (FOOL) Bill Bigsby said. "More and more people are buying pets online and dumping them once they cannot care for them anymore."

Despite being a saltwater fish, Bigsby noted that it is possible for a barracuda to thrive in an environment similar to Grand Lake St. Marys. Given the fish content of the lake, the fish could sustain itself for several years.

"It's not out of the realm of possibility," Bigsby added. "There have been stories of alligators living in Lake Erie so this is not impossible." While barracudas often earn a fierce reputation, Bigsby noted that visitors to the lake should not be leery of entering the waters. Barracudas do not usually pose a threat to swimmers.

"They (swimmers) really don't have anything to worry about," he said. "Barracudas are like most fish and are more afraid of you than you are of them. Chances are if you see one, it would swim away faster than you could."

FOOL officials are currently conducting a study into how many barracudas could be living in the lake. After an accurate count of the fish is determined, a decision would be made whether to remove the population of barracudas or allow them to remain in the lake.

"Once we come to a conclusion on whether or not they are causing environmental damage we will decide," he said. "If they are not harming the fish population or the environment we will let them stay."

Bigsby is also pondering whether or not to file criminal charges against the person who released the barracuda into the lake. While Bigsby acknowledged tracking the fish to a specific individual(s) would be extremely difficult, he hopes to discourage others from buying exotic pets. "It's a practice we want to stop," he added. "These animals should be left in their natural habitats and not sold as pets to some one who thinks it would be cool to own one."

As for Power, he will never forget the day he went fishing and came home with a story to tell for years to come. "I'll never forget seeing that barracuda," he said. "It's not every day you catch one of those in Ohio."

Although netting fish on any Ohio waterway is illegal, people are encouraged to net the barracuda if the have a chance. Anyone who catches or sees a barracuda in Grand Lake-St. Marys should contact FOOL officials at 419-555-7414 and wait until officials arrive, do not release the fish.

There's A Moose In The Garden -

Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten got a rise out of its readership by running several April Fool's hoaxes meant to get a rise out of readers such as "Oslo's local ski association wants to sell the venerable Holmenkollen Ski Jump to a housing developer, and use the proceeds to build a bigger, controversial ski jump in a nearby valley."

The April Fools custom we liked though is how some Norwegians on April 1 will tell their friends and neighbors that there is a moose in their yard... (though sometimes, there really is!)

They played Clay Aiken songs and other top 40 hits and talked about the movies that are coming out this weekend. They also played a message from the station's general manager stating Stern had to be taken off the air because of threats from the FCC. The pranks lasted for 90 minutes until Stern came back on the air to say, 'April Fool.'

The result has stunned the science world. Marty is the only primate able to communicate with Homo Sapiens in their own language via typing in fluent English."

The Aldrich Beef & Ice Cream Parlor, in Fredionia, NY, just southwest of Buffalo, has been offering these wacky April Fool's Day concoctions for the past 20 years. The succotash ice cream, (35 gallons in all), is a combination of vanilla ice cream, corn, lima beans and pimentos. Past flavors have featured such things as bacon and eggs, pork and beans, creamed corn and sauerkraut.

Computer Virus Spreads to Human -

A software developer from Houston, Texas has become the first human to contract a computer virus, microbiologists have confirmed. John Newman, an employee of vTouch Systems, came into contact with the virus through the use of a neural interface that his company is developing. Avril DuChamps, a spokesperson for vTouch Systems, confirmed yesterday at a press conference that Newman had come down with the virus. All activities at vTouch have been suspended until further notice.

Got Milk? - If your milk comes in a cardboard container, add a few drops of food coloring. It's harmless April Fool's joke but the results are pretty colorful.

For a fruity April Fool's practical joke, get a few gummy worms and carefully poke them into fresh fruit, particularly apples. Give mom or dad a wormy apple for lunch and leave a few apples on the table for friends and family members to snack on.

April Showers - If you have a sink with a sprayer, put a rubber band around the handle when nobody's looking. This automatically keeps the nozzle in spray-mode. Make sure the nozzle is pointing up and outward. The next person to use the sink will get a splash! Too funny!

This April Fool's practical joke is old but it still works. Superglue some coins to the sidewalk or any spot that has a lot of people walking around. Make sure it's an appropriate place, then watch people break fingernails to get the coins.

Fill a hot water bottle with blended leftovers or even pea soup. Keep the bottle hidden under your shirt near your chest and make a trip to the cafeteria. Your friends need to be in on this prank. When the cafeteria is full, make a loud noise to attract attention, bend over the table and squeeze the bottle. Your sludge should spew out all over the table like you've just thrown up.

To play a trick on any unsuspecting victim, is the best feeling any one can have! And sometimes, the number does not to stick to any one person but runs to thousands. Tricks have ranged from simple to funny, from the bizarre to downright stupid, but the fun never stops. Here's a list of the top Ten Hoaxes, that I compiled from the Museum of Hoaxes!

1> The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest
In 1957, the BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in, and many called up wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti trees. To this question, the BBC diplomatically replied that they should 'place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.'

2> Sidd Finch
In April 1985, the Sports Illustrated published a story about a new rookie pitcher who planned to play for the Mets. His name was Sidd Finch and he could reportedly throw a baseball with startling, pinpoint accuracy at 168 mph (65 mph faster than anyone else has ever been able to throw a ball). Surprisingly, Sidd Finch had never even played the game before. Instead, he had mastered this art in a Tibetan monastery under the guidance of the 'great poet-saint Lama Milaraspa.' Mets fans everywhere celebrated at their teams's amazing luck at having found such a gifted player, and Sports Illustrated was flooded with requests for more information. But in reality this legendary player only existed in the imagination of the writer of the article, George Plimpton.

3> Instant Color TV
In 1962, there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcasted in black and white. The station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that thanks to a newly developed technology, all viewers could now quickly and easily convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen, and they would begin to see their favorite shows in color. Stensson then proceeded to demonstrate the process. Reportedly, hundreds of thousands of people, out of the population of seven million, were taken in.

4> The Taco Liberty Bell
In 1996, the Taco Bell Corporation announced that it had bought the Liberty Bell from the federal government and was renaming it the Taco Liberty Bell. Hundreds of outraged citizens called up the National Historic Park in Philadelphia where the bell is housed to express their anger. Their nerves were only calmed when Taco Bell revealed that it was all a practical joke a few hours later.

5> San Serriffe
In 1977, the British newspaper The Guardian published a special seven-page supplement in honor of the tenth anniversary of San Serriffe, a small republic located in the Indian Ocean consisting of several semi-colon-shaped islands. A series of articles affectionately described the geography and culture of this obscure nation. Its two main islands were named Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse. Its capital was Bodoni, and its leader was General Pica. The Guardian's phones rang all day as readers sought more information about the idyllic holiday spot. Few noticed that everything about the island was named after printer's terminology. The success of this hoax is widely credited with launching the enthusiasm for April Foolery that then gripped the British tabloids in the following decades.

6> Nixon for President
In 1992, National Public Radio's Talk of the Nation program announced that Richard Nixon, in a surprise move, was running for President again. His new campaign slogan was, "I didn't do anything wrong, and I won't do it again." Accompanying this announcement were audio clips of Nixon delivering his candidacy speech. Listeners responded viscerally to the announcement, flooding the show with calls expressing shock and outrage. Only during the second half of the show did the host John Hockenberry reveal that the announcement was a practical joke. Nixon's voice was impersonated by comedian Rich Little.

7> Alabama Changes the Value of Pi
The April 1998 issue of the New Mexicans for Science and Reason newsletter contained an article claiming that the Alabama state legislature had voted to change the value of the mathematical constant pi from 3.14159 to the 'Biblical value' of 3.0. Before long the article had made its way onto the internet, and then it rapidly made its way around the world, forwarded by people in their email. It only became apparent how far the article had spread when the Alabama legislature began receiving hundreds of calls from people protesting the legislation. The original article, which was intended as a parody of legislative attempts to circumscribe the teaching of evolution, was written by a physicist named Mark Boslough.

8> The Left-Handed Whopper
In 1998, Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich.

9> Hotheaded Naked Ice Borers
In its April 1995 issue, Discover Magazine announced that the highly respected wildlife biologist Dr. Aprile Pazzo had discovered a new species in Antarctica: the hotheaded naked ice borer. These fascinating creatures had bony plates on their heads that, fed by numerous blood vessels, could become burning hot, allowing the animals to bore through ice at high speeds. They used this ability to hunt penguins, melting the ice beneath the penguins and causing them to sink downwards into the resulting slush where the hotheads consumed them. After much research, Dr. Pazzo theorized that the hotheads might have been responsible for the mysterious disappearance of noted Antarctic explorer Philippe Poisson in 1837. Discover received more mail in response to this article than they had received for any other article in their history.

10> Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity
In 1976, the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced on BBC Radio 2 that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to occur that listeners could experience in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth's own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment that this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, BBC2 began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room.

April Fools' Day is one day that is welcomed with both joy and trepidation! Joy for those who love playing pranks and trepidation for those, who are likely to be the targets. But hey, no matter what... there is so much fun involved, that few actually mind being targeted!

Nobody actually knows where did this day suddenly come to be celebrated. Playing pranks on people is not something new, but to have a day officially designated for it, is a very cool idea.
